What the futon is that? 2nd July 2008

I just realised what the black square in the corner of my browser window, which only appeared when I was logged into Gmail was. It’s a little pixellated ‘page fold’.

Futile attempt Google - doesn’t even look one bit like a page fold, in fact, I thought I got a new dead pixel.

Update: Seems there is worldwide concern for this pixelized piece of art. It’s nothing more than a stack of iframes joined together.

The refresh 2nd May 2008

Away at the top, left-hand corner of my room, I sit at the computer. I’m making the web look nicer, site by site. But lately, I’ve been selfish. So soon it will be my own site which gets a bit of a spicing up. Mmm. Coffee?

Yay, I’m not hibernating - yet 16th March 2008

I’ve finally reached the state of neglect, as one does after a few months, before he or she is rejuvenated - it’s a cyclic thing. There are so many things going on around me (which is a lie, actually) which has forced me into a non-blogging state.

Hrm, I’ve forgotten what I was going to say.

I don’t think this was it, but it will do — Lately, I have been influenced, as you do, by all these new snazzy sites popping up all over the show. This means I get to re-design my site, again! Oh yay horray. Actually, it won’t really be a re-design as such, just moving things about, and making things look nicer; but overall, I think it will look different.

Wordpress 2.5 was planned to be released on the 10th March, which has passed, which means they such a meeting targets. Overall, the admin looks much better than the current Wordpress, but structurally, it lacks order and elegance. Check out a demo of it here: WP 2.5 Demo (U: admin P: demo)

Annoyances 2nd February 2008

How do you get the bones of a Wordpress website looking good? The html source code of most Wordpress websites look horrible, including mine — Well I guess I deserve it, compliments the ugly site.

School has started, however my subject choices are subject to change (hah). My subjects clash like crash symbols. My misery is forever compounding - First bad exam marks and now this silly piece of poultry.

Additionally, I hate mouse spasms. I’ve got a optical mouse, and every-so-often, it has this spasm attack causing my cursor to fly to the top, left corner of my monitor.

Oh yeah, and isn’t it good to know that we’re already one twelfth the way through 2008?

Cinderholm’s Refresh 2nd February 2008

Dan Cinderholm’s SimpleBits website has had a little tidy-up. Check it out here.

However I do have my concerns about the distraction caused by the misalignment of the sidebar and main content horizontal lines.

Life on Web 2.0 12th January 2008

MySpace, Virb, Bebo, Facebook, Twitter, Pownce, Vimeo, del.icio.us, Blogs, Flickr, Last.fm (questionable), YouTube — If you’re riding on the Web 2.0 wave, chances are you’re a regular to a handful of these sites. Has Web 2.0 been robbing you of time?

Isn’t it that computers were invented to ease the workload and increase efficiency? Well that’s what I was told anyway. Most recently, news reports are emerging that employees are spending precious working minutes updating their Facebook profiles. There seems to be this moral obligation in Web 2.0 (which I will from here-on refer to as W2) to update the world on what you’re doing and, or how you feel. Especially on social sites, a lapse in correspondence of more than 10 minutes (exceptions apply) between individuals can result in catastrophic friendship melt-downs.

So W2 has made ‘computing’ a chore? It’s all a conspiracy - computers increasing efficiency, but then they leech time off us with all this silly W2 shenanigan. Computer manufacturers, since 2004, have been paid a commission for every hour users are on W2 website (which is paid for by the Web 2.0 Consortium). Ever wondered why computers and parts are getting cheaper day-by-day? Throw away the “technology is advancing, hence cheaper components” or “there is a higher demand” propagandas, and put the blame on Web 2.0.

You see, even I am affected by this cancerous growth called “Web 2.0″… Unsatisfied with original site design and continued interest in climbing the blogging ranks, I too have been robbed of time, spent writing boring articles, spent re-designing and ugly design… which is also ugly. Ah, W2 has captured my heart, soul and big-toe-on-my-left-foot - I am immobilised. Oh save me. Consumed, I drown in a pond of dust, mud, videos, photos and text. That was until I was rescued by the Coastguard - good on ‘em (they’re good guys).

Getting it right - form design 1st January 2008

Forms. Often found at the bottom of pages, they are neglected and are left to e-rot. These form fields are deprived from much needed love from their designer, and understandably so, primarily due to their stubborn, rigid and rectangular design. In turn, we witness a conflicting square-circle relationship between the form field and the body content. More often or not, forms don’t need to be spruced with fancy CSS magic, but require just a little re-composition.

Negative space is our adversary. Negative space created around the fields and the layout of a badly designed form can be unsettling, disrupting the flow from the body-content, onto the fields.

A lengthy 6 months later 28th December 2007

A new site, a shiny-new Wordpress platform, a new web domain and new content to come (none of those cruddy ‘I hate life’ blog posts). Above all, this site will be much more informative, interesting and coolsome to browse through.

Indeed, this was a crazy hiatus - many things happened while I was hibernating: two sets of exams, my birthday, public holidays; including: labour day and Christmas, and soon enough, we’re going to hit the new year. Being away for such a long time is some-what justified - I’ve been developing this site of course! However, the viewer-base has dwindled since I didn’t post anything so basically I have to regain my audience (which I plan to do by spamming these linky site things).
